The Art of the Open Plan: Designing Your Luxury Barndominium Interior

The heart of a barndominium is its open-plan layout. This is where our luxury designs truly shine, offering a flexible, expansive canvas for modern living. Here’s how we master the art of the open plan to create a breathtaking interior.

Creating Zones in a Grand Space
Our designs use clever architectural elements to define different areas without the use of walls. This can include varying ceiling heights, strategically placed feature walls, or the use of lighting and flooring changes to create distinct “zones” for a kitchen, dining area, and living room. The result is a grand, flowing space that still feels intimate and purposeful.

Maximising Natural Light and Views
Large windows and doors are a signature feature of our barndominiums. Our designs are oriented to maximise natural light and frame the stunning Australian landscape, making the outdoors an integral part of your living space. This flood of light not only enhances the sense of luxury and space but also improves the home’s energy efficiency.

The Role of Finishes and Materials
In an open-plan space, consistency and quality of materials are vital. We help you choose a cohesive palette of high-end finishes, from polished concrete floors to timber accents and exposed steel beams. These elements come together to create a luxurious, authentic aesthetic that speaks to the barndominium style.

Director

Luke Fryer is the Founder and Director of Longhorn Barndominiums, bringing more than 20 years of experience across residential construction, project delivery and design-led development.

Driven by a passion for architecture and innovation, Luke spent extensive time in the United States, including Texas, immersing himself in the heritage and craftsmanship of barndominium design and construction. This research became the foundation for Longhorn’s authentic approach to barn-inspired homes in Australia.

Before founding Longhorn, Luke spent 15 years with Metricon Homes, Australia’s largest home builder, where he held senior leadership roles across New South Wales and Queensland. His time with Metricon gave him a deep understanding of what Australians value in a home, as well as the systems required to deliver a professional, high-quality building experience.

Luke also brings experience in cost planning, project feasibility and premium commercial delivery, having worked as Estimating Manager with Australian Developments and later as CEO of Australasian Retail Projects.

Today, Luke leads Longhorn with a vision: to introduce a distinctive new style of home to Australia, combining barn-inspired architecture, refined design and the freedom of acreage living.
