FAQS

Everything you need to know before starting your Longhorn journey.

The Home

What is a barndominium?

A barndominium is a barn-inspired home that blends rural character with modern residential living. Known for open-plan layouts, high ceilings and strong architectural features, barndominiums offer a distinctive alternative to traditional home designs.

Absolutely. You can start with one of our Longhorn Collection designs or create a bespoke home with our design team. Layouts, finishes and features can be personalised to suit your land, lifestyle and vision.

Our design process is collaborative and highly personalised. We work with you to understand your land, lifestyle and vision, then refine the design, layout, finishes and features to suit the way you want to live.

Every Longhorn home is designed around your land, lifestyle and vision, so size and layout can vary. Most clients build homes between 350m² and 750m², with flexible layouts for open-plan living, entertaining, guest areas, garages, workshops and specialty spaces.

Yes. We can incorporate sustainable materials, energy-efficient features and off-grid solutions depending on your site, lifestyle and project goals.

The Build

Do you build barndominiums anywhere in Australia?

Yes. Longhorn works with clients across Australia, with specialist building teams who can travel to your location. Availability may vary depending on your site, region and project timing.

Our team is experienced in delivering homes in regional, rural and acreage locations. We assess access, services, logistics and site conditions early so the right planning is in place before construction begins.

We provide clear, itemised pricing so you can understand the costs involved before moving forward. Our goal is to give you transparency and confidence throughout the process.

Yes. Each Longhorn build is backed by the relevant builder warranties and construction standards, giving you confidence in the quality and longevity of your home.

Unlike a volume builder, our homes are designed for individual clients rather than mass display. Depending on availability and location, we may be able to arrange a walkthrough of a Longhorn home under construction or a completed client home with their permission.

Timelines vary depending on your location, design, approvals and site conditions. We provide timeline guidance and keep you informed throughout each stage of the process.

Yes. Our team can manage the building approval process, working with engineers, surveyors, town planners and certifiers to help ensure your project is compliant and ready to build.

We don’t provide finance directly, however we can connect you with lenders who understand new home construction and barndominium-style projects.

The Longhorn Experience

What sets your barndominiums apart?

Longhorn specialises exclusively in barndominiums, combining authentic barn-inspired architecture with modern Australian living. Every home is designed for space, flexibility and architectural impact, with expert guidance from design through to construction.

Unlike a volume builder, our homes are designed for individual clients rather than mass display. Depending on availability and location, we may be able to arrange a walkthrough of a Longhorn home under construction or a completed client home with their permission.

As part of the design process, we also work with EnViz to create a VR experience of your home on your block. This allows you to explore the placement of your home, consider the best views and orientation, walk through the design at scale and customise elements before construction begins.

Director

Luke Fryer is the Founder and Director of Longhorn Barndominiums, bringing more than 20 years of experience across residential construction, project delivery and design-led development.

Driven by a passion for architecture and innovation, Luke spent extensive time in the United States, including Texas, immersing himself in the heritage and craftsmanship of barndominium design and construction. This research became the foundation for Longhorn’s authentic approach to barn-inspired homes in Australia.

Before founding Longhorn, Luke spent 15 years with Metricon Homes, Australia’s largest home builder, where he held senior leadership roles across New South Wales and Queensland. His time with Metricon gave him a deep understanding of what Australians value in a home, as well as the systems required to deliver a professional, high-quality building experience.

Luke also brings experience in cost planning, project feasibility and premium commercial delivery, having worked as Estimating Manager with Australian Developments and later as CEO of Australasian Retail Projects.

Today, Luke leads Longhorn with a vision: to introduce a distinctive new style of home to Australia, combining barn-inspired architecture, refined design and the freedom of acreage living.
